Cable Technician Simulation Platform

Training cable technicians to handle real-world challenges effectively requires more than just static courses—it demands hands-on, immersive learning. I was brought on to develop realistic 3D training simulations that replicate real-world service scenarios. Rather than creating one-off, hardcoded simulations, I built a flexible platform that allows for new simulations to be designed and deployed without writing code. The simulations put the user in compelete control to navigate the environment, communicate with the customer, perform troubleshooting operations and repair, and finally to declare that the job is complete.

Overview

  • Custom Node-Based System
The core of the platform is a fully custom event and grading system, built within Unity’s Editor UI. This allows training designers to create complex, interactive scenarios dynamically.

  • Modular & Scalable
Each simulation is packaged like DLC in a video game—new scenarios can be built and uploaded to the Learning Management System (LMS) as standalone courses, without modifying the core application.

  • Realistic, Engaging Training
These simulations were designed with a strong focus on realism, helping technicians practice decision-making, troubleshooting, and hands-on skills in a safe, virtual environment.

Highlights

  1. Dynamic Simulation Creation

    • Training designers can build new simulations without programming knowledge.
    • The node-based editor enables custom event triggers, logic, and grading for each scenario.
  2. Streamlined LMS Integration

    • New training modules are exported as standalone packages.
    • Content can be deployed and updated without rebuilding the entire system.
  3. Engagement & Realism

    • Scenarios replicate real-life challenges technicians face in the field.
    • Well-received by trainees, particularly those familiar with video games.
  4. Scalable Future-Proofing

    • The framework supports expansion with new tools and content updates.
    • The modular structure allows continuous iteration and improvement.

Conclusion

By developing a custom simulation framework, I helped create a scalable, interactive training solution that empowers non-technical designers to craft engaging learning experiences. This system provided technicians with an immersive, game-like way to practice real-world skills, leading to stronger retention and more effective training outcomes.
